This spectacular Sea Eagle Transformation Mask was hand-carved in 1992 by Kwakwaka'wakw Master Carver Calvin Hunt. This mask has been carved from red cedar, painted in red, green, grey, white, and black acrylic, and accented with cedar bark.

The Sea Eagle, or Kwigwis, is a supernatural being from Kwakwaka'wakw mythology, serving as the Eagle's counterpart in the Undersea Kingdom. Those who encountered Kwigwis were considered blessed by the experience.

The transformative power of this mask is reflected in it's articulated design. When the cords beneath the mask are pulled, the Sea Eagles face and beak split down the middle, with the bottom of the beak opening downwards. The transformation reveals a carved and painted interior, with a human figure in the center flanked by spirit figures on either side and below. Beneath the eagle's beak on the exterior, another spirit figure is depicted.

The mask, when opened, measures approximately 46 inches or 117 centimeters wide, 31 inches or 79 centimeters high, and 29 inches or 74 centimeters deep.
